In this article, Joseph Goldstein, a very experienced and influential Insight meditation teacher, explores his confusion about the apparent difference of opinion between different schools of Theravāda Buddhism, Korean Ch’an, and Dzogchen on the status of consciousness/awareness. His own tradition teaches that consciousness is something transitory, whereas Ch’an and Dzogchen believe awareness—pure awareness, or rigpa—is the uncreated, unconditioned buddha-nature, tathāgatagarbha. How can they both be right?
